Eyes on the Prize

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)

I’ve engaged in a lot of competitions over the years – mostly in the world of sports.  However, 2005 marked my most important competition to date – with myself – to deliver on a promise to read the bible from cover to cover before year end.  With Dee by my side, we embraced this challenge together and set aside time each day in devotion to reading the word.  Yes, there were a few days that slipped by due to laziness or exhaustion, but never a second.  Our eyes remaining focused, we successfully finished the race, and we ultimately received the prize that had eluded us all of our lives.

I am pleased to announce that the race continues.  Dee and I have decided to make reading the bible a daily part of our lives.  The fixed reading schedule we kept to so strictly in 2005 admittedly is gone, but our commitment to the Lord is not.  I pray that commitment remains strong, and He remains always at the center of our lives and our marriage.

The Christmas Shoebox

  “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.     Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7-8)   Two Saturdays ago, I had one of those non-stop days.  I got up early and had hours of intense office work to do.  After that, I took a break from that to help Dee get the Christmas decorations up.  After that, I switched to get some urgent outdoor items done before the Minnesota frozen tundra took over for the winter.  I capped the day by switching back to the intense office work for a couple hours.   At about 9 pm I was ready to collapse in a heap when Dee said, “we have to get the Christmas shoeboxes put together so we can take them to church tomorrow”.  After thinking about it for a minute, I reluctantly agreed.   Thankfully, Dee had taken the lead on buying everything for 4 boxes (...
